Retaining walls — concrete & block

A retaining wall is structure dressed up as landscape. Most failures come from bad drainage behind the wall — not the wall itself. We dig deeper, drain better, and use the right block for the height.

What we do differently

Built to last, not to ship.

The cheap version of this work isn't really cheap — it's deferred. Here's what we don't cut.

  • 01

Permit and engineering requirements confirmed for the property

  • 02

Granular base 12 inches minimum, compacted in lifts

  • 03

Drain tile + clear stone behind every wall

  • 04

Geogrid for tall walls or heavy loads above

  • 05

    Block options: Permacon, Belgard, Unilock

How a job runs

From first call to clean exit.

Every project follows the same arc. The detail changes, the discipline doesn't.

  1. 01

    Survey & design

    Heights, loads, drainage path.

  2. 02

    Permit

Pulled for walls over 4 ft or near property lines.

  3. 03

    Excavate

    Down to undisturbed soil.

  4. 04

    Base

Granular A, compacted to 95% Proctor.

  5. 05

    Build up

Block course by course, geogrid where engineered.

  6. 06

    Backfill & drain

Clear stone, filter fabric, weeping tile to daylight.

FAQ

Common questions

  • Possibly. Height is only one factor. Location, loading, drainage, public access, grading, and local rules can also trigger approvals. Confirm the property and proposed wall with the municipal building department before construction.

  • Clear gravel (¾" crushed) for 12 inches behind, filter fabric to keep silt out, and a perforated drain pipe sloped to daylight. Without that, hydraulic pressure tears walls apart.

  • Block (Permacon, Versa-Lok) is faster, more forgiving, and works to about 8 ft. Poured walls work for taller heights or commercial loads.
