How much does a concrete driveway cost in Ontario? (2026 numbers)

It's the first question on almost every call, so here's the straight answer: the version I'd give my brother-in-law if he called and asked.

The short version

Our concrete driveways start at $11 per square foot for a plain broom finish with full base prep. Stamped or coloured concrete costs more per foot, and so does tearing out an old driveway first.

For a typical two-car driveway (about 400 to 500 sq ft), that puts a broom finish at roughly $4,400 to $5,500 before tear-out and extras.

That's a starting rate, not a ceiling or a floor. Bigger driveways come down per square foot. Small ones cost more per foot, because getting the crew, the equipment, and the concrete truck to your place costs the same whether it's 200 square feet or 800.

What changes the price

1. Tear-out

If the old driveway has to come out first, concrete removal starts at $3.50 per square foot for breaking it up, hauling it, and disposal.

2. Base prep

Most failures start in the base. We dig 12 inches minimum and put 6 inches of compacted granular A. Some contractors skip this — they pour over whatever's there. It saves them money up front. It costs you a new driveway in 8 years.

3. Reinforcement

Every pour we do gets rebar or fibre reinforcement. If you park heavy vehicles on it (an RV, a loaded work truck), a tighter rebar grid is worth the extra, and we'll price it into the quote.

4. Slope and access

If the concrete truck can't reach the pour, the concrete has to be pumped in, and the pump is an extra charge. If your lot is sloped, we may need to grade or build forms higher. Both add hours.

5. Finish

Broom is the cheapest. Stamped and coloured concrete cost more because of the extra labour and material. Exposed aggregate takes the most hands-on work, which is why it usually costs the most.

What's not included in cheap quotes

If a quote comes in far below everyone else's, look closely. They're probably:

• Pouring on existing base without prepping
• Using 3,000 PSI concrete instead of 4,000 PSI
• Skipping rebar entirely
• Not sealing
• Not pulling a permit (in some townships, you need one)

That driveway will look fine for two winters and then start mapping with hairline cracks. By year five, it'll be visibly failing.

When to do it

Spring and early fall are the best windows. Summer pours work, but in real heat the slab has to be kept from drying too fast. Late fall is risky in Ontario, because fresh concrete needs warm enough days to cure before the frost gets into it.
